You can't scale a business without scaling your skills

Bigger business, bigger demands. Your skills have to grow with it.

Bigger business, bigger demands: a chart showing the skills needed rising as the business grows. Your skills have to grow with it.

How can you scale a business without scaling your skills? The truth: you can't.

You're good at your trade. You do good work. Word gets around, and the business grows. Now you've got more orders, more employees, and more problems landing on your desk.

Being good at the work doesn't automatically mean you know how to schedule a shop, manage inventory, train employees, or lead a team.

I know because I've struggled with it too. I've learned things the hard way, figured things out as I went, and realized that working harder wasn't going to fix everything. Eventually, you run out of hours in the day.

So what do you do? You have three options:

  • Option 1: Decide you don't want to get bigger. There's nothing wrong with running a small business that pays the bills and gives you a life you enjoy.
  • Option 2: Learn what you don't know. Take a class. Read a book. Watch the training. Then make time to actually use what you learned.
  • Option 3: Phone a friend. Find someone who's been in the weeds, made mistakes, and can help you work through yours. Someone who will work alongside you and your crew to make the day run better.

You don't have to figure out every damn thing by yourself.

Asking for help can be hard when you're used to being the person everyone else comes to. But the businesses that keep growing are the ones whose owners keep growing with them, whether that means learning a new skill or leaning on someone who already has it.
